Tree Filters & Sorting

Learn how to narrow the sidebar tree to the documents you’re working on: every draft, everything Dwight owns, every page still waiting for review.

While a filter is active, the tree drops your manual hierarchy and shows a flat list of matches with a count at the top. Clear the filter and the hierarchy comes back untouched.

Filter the tree

1. At the top of the sidebar, select the filter icon.
2. Select Add filter.
3. From the first dropdown, select the property to filter by.
4. From the second dropdown, select a condition.
5. Enter or pick a value.

Add more rows to narrow further — a document has to match every row. Sixteen rows is the ceiling; Add filter stops offering more at that point.

You can filter on any Custom Fields in the project. The built-in properties cover Name, Alias, Parent, Workflow, Visibility, Access level, Locked, Archived, Successor, and the created and updated dates — including who did it.

Conditions follow the property’s type. Text offers contains and is. Selects offer is and is not, lists offer has any of and has all of, and dates offer before, after, and between.

Most properties also offer is empty and is not empty, which is how you ask questions the other conditions can’t. An empty Parent means the document sits at the root. An empty Successor finds archived pages nobody has pointed at a replacement yet.

Parent matches direct children only, never a whole branch — filtering on a section gives you the pages directly under it, not their children. It is also the one property you cannot sort by.

Keep in mind: A custom field with a project default counts as filled on every document that never set its own value. Those documents match a filter on the default’s value, and they do not match is empty. Is empty finds documents whose value was explicitly cleared, and documents with no value where the field has no default at all.

Sort the results

Select Sort, next to the filters. The default is Manual order — the hierarchy you arranged by hand. Switch it to a name, a date, or a sortable custom field, and use the arrow to flip between ascending and descending.
